Althe Artist Residency is an artist-in-residence program launched jointly by Vacant and Roche Projects. Artists from Japan and abroad are invited to stay at Vacant/Centre to conduct research to deepen their knowledge on Japanese culture, produce works, and present the results of their work.
The first artist is Magdalena Skupinska from Poland, who is currently based in London. She paints abstract compositions from purely organic materials derived from herbs, spices, flowers, fruit, and vegetables. The exhibition Aftertime features her encounters and experimentations with Japanese flora and botanical materials and the dynamic hues they create.
Althe Artist Residency はVacantとRoche Projectが共同でスタートした、アーティスト・イン・レジデンスプログラムです。国内外のアーティストを招聘し、Vacant/Centreに滞在しながらリサーチ、制作から成果発表までをおこないます。
記念すべき第一回目のアーティストはポーランド出身で、現在ロンドンをベースに活動するマグダレナ・スクピンスカ。ハーブ、スパイス、花、果実や野菜などの自然素材から絵具をつくり、抽象的な風景を描き出します。彼女の念願だったという日本の滞在を通した、自然や文化、素材に関するリサーチのプロセスとともに、今回制作された作品の展示をおこないます。
Magdalena Skupinska
Magdalena Skupinska (b. 1991, Warsaw, Poland) is a London-based painter whose work reflects modernist traditions of biomorphic abstraction, arte povera, and minimalism. Skupinska formulates her paints solely from organic materials, drawing inspiration from literature on fora, botanical medicine, and her own day-to-day relationship with plants.
Skupinska completed her BA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins and her MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art, both in London.
Her solo exhibitions include Fertile Plate at Blum & Poe in Los Angeles (2023), Blending Elements (2022), Layú at Maximillian William in London (2019), DAMA at Palazzo Saluzzo Paesana in Turin, Italy (2016), and Elements of Silence at Maximillian William in London (2015).
Skupinska’s work is held in collections including the Museo Jumex and the Zabludowicz Collection. She has participated in residencies in Dakar, Senegal; Oaxaca, Mexico; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
